Stepping into a new leadership role
Before proving yourself, take time to understand the role you have actually entered.
Separate the role from the story
Write down what has formally changed: decisions, responsibilities and reporting relationships. Then list the expectations you are assuming. Keeping the two apart creates questions you can take to your manager or team.
Listen across the system
Ask different colleagues what works, what gets in the way and what they hope will remain. Treat each account as a perspective, not the complete picture. Look for differences worth exploring rather than rushing to a single diagnosis.
Choose a small first commitment
For example, you might clarify how one recurring decision will be made. Explain the change, invite feedback and review its effect. This is a practical experiment, not a promise that one approach fits every team.
A question to take with you
Which expectation in your new role needs to be discussed rather than assumed?
Editorial guides offer general reflection, not a personalised coaching plan.
