What to expect from a coaching conversation

A useful conversation starts with a shared understanding of what you are there to explore.

Start with a real situation

You do not need an impressive goal. A decision you keep postponing, a new responsibility or a conversation you are avoiding can provide a specific starting point. Describe what is happening before deciding what it means.

Agree what would be useful

A coach and client can clarify the purpose of the conversation together. Advice, reflection and specialist support serve different needs. Ask how your coach works, what the boundaries are and how you will review whether the work is useful.

Leave with something you own

A next step might be a small action, a clearer question or a different way of understanding the situation. It should be yours to choose. An action that fits your context is more useful than a promise made simply to finish the session.

A question to take with you

What would make one conversation worthwhile for you?
