Preparing for your first coaching conversation
A few notes can help you arrive with something concrete, without turning preparation into another task to perfect.
Capture what brings you here
Write three short notes: what is happening, why it matters now and what you would like to understand. Include uncertainty. “I do not know what I want next” can be an honest starting point.
Bring questions of your own
Ask about the practitioner’s approach, the practical arrangements and the boundaries of confidentiality. You are also deciding whether this relationship feels appropriate for you. There is no need to agree an engagement before you understand it.
Allow the focus to develop
Your first explanation may change as you speak. That is not failed preparation. It can help distinguish the immediate event from the underlying question. Leave room to reconsider the goal rather than defending the first version.
A question to take with you
What do you want the coach to understand about your context?
